Blog 13

This topic fits perfectly on what I talked about in my presentation and my meaning in life.  In the Corey and Corey (2010) book, they talk about how spirituality and meaning are really important when thinking of what a higher power, like God, wants us to do with our lives.  Through my creative project I have found that because of my faith and going to Messiah College and my experiences there with professors and classes, I have found that I wanted to counsel students.  Throughout my entire college career at Messiah, I was always forced to think about my meaning in life through papers and presentations.  We also had to incorporate how our faith relates to our meaning in life and how that would look like when we graduate from college.  It was nice to constantly go over what I was called to do because I know that I am on the right path to be a school counselor and I know that is what God wants me to do.  I believe that I am called to help people who are experiencing hard times.  Knowing this aspect of my life and how I have gone through making this decision and reflecting and praying about it a lot, I know I can incorporate helping students find their meanings in their lives.  Like I have said during my presentations, I will not shove my beliefs onto other people, but I feel as if I can help them to figure out what is meaningful in their lives and what they want to do in their future careers.  Even though mine is how my meaning relates to my spirituality, other may think of it as a philosophy in life and what they would like to do with that (Corey & Corey, 2010).  There are many avenues I can use to help students grow in who they are and to help them find what they want to get out of life.
As a future counselor it is very important to go over your prejudices and how to respond to racism.  For me personally, I feel that I am not a racist person because I do enjoy everyone, but I know from my cultural experiences that I have stereotypes on certain races but I do not feel hate toward a particular population.  Throughout my journey as a future counselor, I have been working on my awareness of my prejudice and how I can help others respond to racism.  The first step that I can take to help others who are racist is to make them aware of what they are telling themselves about that particular race (Corey & Corey, 2010).  From there on I can help them work through their fears and anxieties and help them avoid judging differences.  There is still a lot of racism out there in today’s world and if we catch it during children’s lives we can help change their perspective on society.
